RIO DE JANEIRO — Simone Biles has a fan in Nadia Comaneci.
Whether Biles is the greatest gymnast of all time, Comaneci will leave that to history to decide.
Biles won the Olympic all-around title Thursday night in a rout, beating Final Five teammate Aly Raisman by 2.1 points. It was, by far, the largest margin of victory in her three-year — and counting — winning streak.
Martha and Bela Karolyi, who coached Comaneci, both said they think the Olympic title cements Biles’ place as the best ever. But Comaneci, who remains the sport’s greatest icon 40 years after scoring the first perfect 10 at the Olympics, said it’s too soon to assign such labels, especially when Biles can add more golds to her collection.
“Simone is an amazing Olympic champion and I am a big fan,” Comaneci told USA TODAY Sports. “However, only time will tell if she will become the greatest of all time.”
